Yes, the lids touch the handles where the bolt was.  They flex enough to allow opening without marring them.
I am going to remove the passenger handle assembly and cut off the bulge using a bandsaw.  Then smooth out and paint.

Looks good.  I like the integration of the OEM bags, however, that’s a sportier looking set up.  Nice.

Not even close to the same ballpark as far as price goes, but the factory soft cases are what you should look at for a sporty look with the cleaner factory mount.  20L each is a pretty close match to the SH23.  I really like the look of mine on the bike.
The factory hard luggage is more or less SH36 territory, which give the bike a pretty big booty.
