Compared to an I4 sure, but it sounds just about right for a non-Japanese twin.

It puts out some peculiar rattles and sounds at or around idle that soon disappear with a little throttle. Not so disconcerting as the rest of the rev range sounds quite good.

I was paranoid too so I took my F900XR down to my dealer for a second opinion. The service tech said "they all sound like that mate". Which made me feel slightly better. Maybe.
The bike sound dreadful at tickover, I'm amazed that a modern motorcycle engine makes so much mechanical noise. The cam chain also rattles briefly on start up and the clutch rumbles unless the lever is pulled in.
I love the bike but I wish the engine didn't sound so noisy. Hopefully the engine lasts for 100,000 miles and my concerns will turn out to be groundless.

At idle I also found the crankcase rattle a little disconcerting. Pulling the clutch reduces it a bit which is probably the noise contributed by the gears freewheeling without load. Engine sounds best under deceleration but will never match an I4 or a Harley - totally different sounds. But 900 overall has a nice tone to it.

Yes, the XR does make some noise at Idle plus the clutch sounds like it needs a new Thrust Race Bearing.( Common in Cars)
But as they all sound that way I just ride it and smile.
I have owned a Ducati Multistrada. Now That makes lots of noise!!!! :005:

Agree thrust bearing sound describes it perfectly.

Do you think this is a problem - the very different noise when clutch is pressed and depressed on Neutral not in motion?
I was really concerned last year but winter was coming and I put my bike in garage and forgot totally about it.
