I was informed by (a very well respected) independent BMW workshop, when I asked him why I can't I get my chain sparking? He replied 'they fit a cheap chain' !

Rather than post a new thread about this I thought I would add my post here from changing mine yesterday for a DID Gold/Black with JT sprockets...

Today I did the air filter, which is ridiculously easy and the chain/sprocket kit, which is a pain as BMW made 1 part do several jobs. This 1 plate holds both front and rear pegs, the gear shift pivot, the bolts for both stands and the swing arm pivot bolt which is a single use item... Oh it also acts as the front sprocket cover so has to come off  :062:

An engineer in Bavaria is probably very proud of such multi tasking of a single Aluminium casting, anyone who even wants to clear the old chain gunk from around the front sprocket want's to curse his name.

I have a paddock stand but it has hooks, so I used my old scissor lift table, Bike up on the main stand, rear wheel out, lift table under the swing arm until the main stand is off the ground then I could take that side plate off.

I have a reasonable set of torx bits and needed the biggest one.

Cleaned out and checking the new cushioned front sprocket fits.

Air filter is nice and easy

On a more positive note, not having to thread the chain through the frame means that the new one can be riveted on the bench with my chain tool held in the vise, much easier than doing it on the bike, freehand trying not to scratch painted shiny parts. :152:

:762: :763:- what a pita to have to support the bike other than on the centre stand  :087:  but as you say good that the chain can be fitted already joined up (I would therefore assume (yes dangerous thing to do) if you buy the stupidly expensive BMW chain it comes already joined)

Yeah I think it does, BMW wanted £130 just for fitting and I can see why as it's a pain but it's a thing that I can handle myself. I enjoy the tinkering.

For anyone having a go you will need a T60, T50, T40 and T30 torx bits, 17mm socket and 34mm, chain riveter and a tape measure or small ruler.

Then the torque settings range from 28Nm for the 2 smaller side plate bolts, 38Nm for the 3 larger ones, Rear spindle is 100Nm and 200Nm for the replacement swing arm bolt.
Not everyone has a selection of torque wrenches and Torx bits, if you don't then by the time you've bought everything it would be cheaper to get the dealer to handle it.

@Stonesie - good job and post. What kind of mileage is your bike at for this chain/sprocket change?
    Thanks.
