    Engine really noisy ??

HI Guys just bought a F900XR 2021 bike with 1500 miles on it, its had its 600 mile service and Ive booked it in for its first annual for next Saturday
The engine seems very rattly on initial start up from cold and then when the revs drop down as it warms it sounds like an old Ducati it revs up ok and rides ok but its just the rattling im very worried about, granted its still got 2 years warranty on it but it done sound good, is this correct are they noisy ??

    Cheers Rob

If you are comparing it to the rattle in the old dry clutch Ducatis.  Your bike should not be anywhere near that loud.  I suggest you get it looked at, which you are already doing.

    "Dry clutch Ducatis?"

I thought those were diesel motorcycles.  :008:

Seriously, I never heard a louder rattle than a dry clutch Ducati with a vented clutch cover. The owner said he was going to put the original cover back on.

Well had the bike in for its first annual service and two of the tecky guys listened to it and both said no thats correct, youll do 100Kmiles on that and it wont sound any different, then started a S1000R up for me to listen to I ducked, I thought bits of engine was going to actually hit me !! they all sound the same so it must be me but my R1250GS is quieter without doubt, its still got 2 years BMW Warranty on it so if anything is wrong it can go back, but in the meantime ill enjoy riding it as I really like the bike it feels so much lighter than the GS

I agree. Have my F900XR for three weeks now and indeed the rattling sound is very annoying. (not only when idling, but also when you ride slowly thru town)
Allthough the motor and exhaust have a nice sound themselves.
I was told that it's the chain for the valve timing that makes this noice.
    And that's not a problem.

Too bad , because a 900cc Yamaha 3 cylinder motor sounds much better than the BMW.   :003:

I'm not surprised that owners are finding the XR noisy, rattly and a bit agricultural as the 900cc motor is basicalally a bored out 800cc engine that was in the F800GT, my previous bike. If you look on that forum there are loads of owners complaining of noisy and rattly engines. Again they were told by dealerships that this is normal and a character of the bike / engine.
At least when I collect my 2021 XR on Wesnesday with 18 miles on the clock and it sounds like a bag of spanners I wont be too concerned.

Noisy yes, but not at all related to the 800 F-Twin engines.  These 900s are the 850 that's been bored out with some other tweaks, but they share nothing with the Rotax engine.
I actually think my 800GS was a little more quiet thanks to the 360d firing order.
Interestingly enough, I fitted an Arrow Ti slip-on this weekend and with the exhaust note changed it highlights how noisy the engine actually is. I think r stock exhaust had some audible overlap with the engine noise, similar frequencies.  It doesn't bother me, but it did make me chuckle thinking of this topic.

Agreed. I have a friend with an 800GS. That Rotax based motor is a lot less noisy than the 850/900 motor. Our motors make a lot of tappet noise. I've done similar and put an SC Project pipe on mine. Now the burble from the back end compensates for the rattling front end....😁

RCB is spot on! The f900 engine shares nothing with the Rotax engine in the F800s. I don't find my XR engine particularly noisy either. In fact I'm finding that my bike has improved in a number ways since I bought it, now with around 6.000 mls on the clock. The quick shifter is more slick both up and down the box and the oil consumption has improved, although it was never an issue. It's a great bike in my opinion, so easy to ride. As an after thought I do wear ear plugs when riding.
